October marks the most important month for the club with the men’s and women’s club championships. We have prepared the course as well as we can to provide the best course presentation for these championships. Unfortunately we have not had enough rain to try and grow the grass over the many bare patches on the course. David and his team have worked tirelessly to improve the course. I wish all participants the best of luck.
These championships have presented me with a dilemma regarding the conditions of play. At present the conditions are preferred lie through the green. This was implemented because of the lack of grass growth during the winter and it was very difficult to determine the fairway to the rough. Most courses on the coast have also had the same course rule. The dilemma I face is to maintain the current rule or go to play as it lies. I doubt very much we can get the fairways mown so they are clearly defined. Please check the board on the day regarding conditions of play.
Two major changes on the course will come into effect for the championships and future events.
All yellow hazard pegs have been changed to Red
The special grasses on the 15th and 17th holes now become a integral part of the course and not a garden or GUR . The grasses have been trimmed and thinned.
2019 will mark a major change in the rules of golf. A rules information night for members will be conducted on Thursday 29th November. This event will be hosted by Graeme Phillipson from Golf NSW. Graeme has recently completed a road show to all parts of NSW with the rules presentation. Representatives from the other district clubs will also be invited. New rule books will be available to all members on this night.

Ladies News
It has been great to see some rain at last, although we certainly need some follow up. The course is still very dry but holding up pretty well.
Pro Shop day is always a popular day in our programme and once again proved very popular with the ladies. Some of the scores were amazingly good and some amazingly errrr, not so good. Congratulations to the winners:
Div I – Sally Hopkins; Div II – Fran James; Div III – Bernie Kirkman. I would like to thank Kieran for the donation of prizes for our top 3 winners.
Invitation Day was a great success played in gorgeous sunshine. We had a fantastic field of 112. It was good to see so many visitors. Thanks go to the Social committee for the lovely morning tea that awaited all on arrival and their enormous help throughout the day, and to all our very generous members that contributed and bought from the splendid trade table. I believe all enjoyed the Las Vegas ambrose,it was a fun change to the normal teams events.
Nominations are now open for 2019 Committee. All positions are open, so please seriously consider either your own possible nomination or else the people you would like to have on your committee – after all it is yourcommittee. Nomination forms are in the Ladies locker room. The AGM will be held on Tuesday 23rd October following the finals of the Top Ten Shootout. It would be great to see a huge number of ladies cheering on the finalists, and then staying on for the AGM.
Good luck in the Championships.
Thank you Ladies and good golfing

Superintendent’s Report – September 2018
Summary of works
September brought with it 30mm of rain, slightly down on the monthly average (53mm)
Our dam water supply is full and clear of salt.
The greens are currently getting cut at 3mm.
The greens have come out of winter looking and performing well. We are now applying Primo (growth retardant) at 300ml per hectare. The green speed has dropped slightly largely due to the winter grass seed head, our fertiliser program but mostly to the amounts of irrigation we are now adding to the greens.
The fairways have been deep sliced, all fairways have had an application of herbicide and insecticide applied, as well being fertilised, fairway watering has begun.
The 1st fairway has been cored as well and the bare areas have been dug out to remove the old hard soil, as well as the many tree roots which have invaded the fairway. New soil and turf have been added.
To help the greens retain their moisture this summer, we have once again trenched around the 1st 3rd, 5th, 6th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 18th greens. We cut a 1 metre deep trench to prune the roots of all nearby trees around these selected greens.
Renovations are scheduled for the end of October, and a full update of the process and the outcomes will be posted in the November Newsletter.

Tip from the pro
Everybody wants more spin, especially with hitting approach shots into greens. The sad truth is though, that we don’t realise what we can do to help. How many times have you pulled your wedge out of your bag all covered in grime and soil from the last time you used it? Then proceed to hit your chip/pitch shot and complain that it doesn’t spin when it hits the green. How many times have you cleaned it, hit a good shot with great contact on your distance ball, and it scampers through the back of the green. When you look down at rusty’, your trusted wedge from years gone by, does he look a little tired???
The simple way we can achieve more spinning golf shots is with…Friction. To get friction we need:
Professional grade wedges (Vokey SM7, Cleveland RTX-4 or Callaway Mac Daddy’s)
A Premium Golf Ball (Titleist prov1/Srixon z star/Bridestone Xs)
A Clean face and clean grooves (No grime)
Believe it or not that is it. If you struggle with getting that ball to stop on the greens speak to one of our qualified PGA professionals about your equipment or your club care on course, and we will get you on your way to better golf.
