Tom and Jerry were playing the 14th hole at GGC. Tom’s tee shot headed towards the out of bounds to the left of the green. They were unsure if it in fact went out of bounds, or could even be lost. Tom announced that he would play a provisional ball, and proceeded to do so. This ball finished only centimetres from the hole. As a result Tom did not wish to find his original ball. Jerry believes it would be beneficial to him if the original ball was found. May Jerry search for Tom’s ball?
ANSWER:
Yes, he may search for five minutes provided Tom does not play a stroke at his provisional ball, it being nearer the hole than his original ball. Tom is entitled to play a stroke at his provisional ball and if he does so then the original ball is lost (see rule 27-2b) and there would be no point in searching for the original ball. In match play if Tom so proceeds and Tom’s ball is closer to the hole than Jerry’s then Jerry could recall Tom’s
stroke, however this would not change the status of the original ball which was lost when Tom played a stroke at his provisional ball.
