Tom and Jerry were playing the 18th hole at GGC. Jerry struck his tee shot towards the green keepers shed and eventually found his ball hard against the metal sheeting forming the wall of that shed on the fairway side of the shed. Jerry asked Tom, his marker and fellow competitor for a free drop away from the shed. Tom informed Jerry that he could declare his ball unplayable and take two club length’s relief, or replay his stroke from the tee, under penalty of one stroke. Jerry insisted that he was entitled to free relief from his predicament. How would you rule?
ANSWER: Tom is correct, as Jerry’s ball was resting against the shed wall which at Gosford is also part of the course boundary. There is no free relief from boundaries and the ball must be played as it lies, or the player has the option of declaring his ball unplayable and proceeding under rule 28.
